Amateurs have Award Winning Success with smaller tanks and skins.

I started using your 30 gal and 50 gal Flex Tanks with the skins and Oak adjuncts in 2012. I'm an amateur grape grower and wine maker who only uses his own grapes to make his wine. Rarely do I have enough volume to fill any tank so the skins have proven very successful. The 2013 wines seemed rather good so I entered them in the USA wide amateur competition "Bottle Shock Open" and won four medals. A bronze for a Tempranillo/Merlot blend. Two silvers, one for a Tempranillo and one for a Merlot, Tempranillo & Cab Franc blend. A final double gold medal was awarded for a Merlot/Tempranillo blend that I call "Dads Blend". The double gold "Dads Blend" was also given 98 points. I'm very pleased with the control and results I have had with the Flex Tanks.

Richard received his Ph.D in Plant Physiology in 1973 from the University of California, Riverside. After a stint in academia he bought a winery in California that he sold in the early 80’s. Subsequently he started Vitis Research, Inc. a consulting company to wineries and wine industry suppliers. He has helped wineries with many issues with respect to growing and making world class wines. Ultimately in 2002 he started his own winery brand Tamanend Winery and as an Alternate Premises winery facility he produces wines for himself and up to eight other wineries.

“Flextanks are an integral part of our winemaking program and have been since the 2008 harvest, when a fellow winemaker suggested them. We bought one 300 gal Flextank Stacker, used it for a year, loved the results and immediately purchased a half dozen more.

We lack space in our winery and the footprint of one Flextank (5 bbls of wine) is less space than two double stacked bbls. And storing them when not in use?  I can stack them outside, three or even FOUR high!

We are currently using them to age both our reds and housing our whites prior to bottling. With the red wines I’ve begun experimenting with oak inserts in the Flextanks and have discovered that I’m needing less new French Oak, thus saving a bunch of cash. What I REALLLY love them for is racking! All we do is raise the FlexTank with a forklift, open the valve and gravity feed from one Flextank to another. And unlike barrels, they are easy to clean and they last forever… I’m sold!”
